CHAPTER SIX

SARA was still staring at the phone when Max came back into the room. He asked ‘Who was the caller?’

She said, ‘They rang off.’

It could have been for him. It must have been put through to this room from somewhere else in the house, and she said, ‘You can always find out, but it was not my family.’

‘It hasn’t been much of a homecoming for you, has it?’ Just a few minutes ago he had walked out on her looking and sounding as if he could turn into her enemy. This seemed like a different man.

‘Like you said,’ she said. ‘It’s been instructive.’

‘Sorry about that.’

Her mouth fell open. ‘That’s not something you say often.’

‘I can’t remember the last time.’ But when she tried to speak he said, ‘I’m not going back on the financial condition, I’m interested to see how they’ll react on that one, but about Douglas. You made his evening, and I was wrong to accuse you of stringing him along.’

‘Yes, you were.’

‘Truce?’

She didn’t want antagonism. She was tired of struggling. She gave a small shrug. ‘Why not?’ But when he smiled a smile tugged at her lips and widened to a grin. ‘Yes, please,’ she said. Heaven knew she wanted him on her side. Even when she came close to hating him she wanted him.

‘Come to bed,’ he said, and a frisson of desire quickened her blood. ‘I’ll let you sleep; you’ve had enough hassle for one day.’

‘Hassle, you call it?’ she teased, and they both were laughing.

Max was in bed before her. He held out his arms and she nestled against him and lay quietly. He held her gently, giving her a feeling of safety and comfort, as he had when he’d wrapped her into the cashmere coat, and as she fell asleep in the cool dark she thought, This is like coming home.
